Math 2550: Introduction to Multivariable Calculus

Section S01—S06

Course Information (Fall 2024)

Welcome to Multivariable Calculus. This course is designed to introduce you to the fundamental concepts of calculus in two and three dimensional spaces. All our students play an important role in our educational mission. Your active engagement is the most important key to your success in this course. We hope that you will find this to be a useful, fundamental, and enjoyable course for your future studies.

Note on class modes:  This course will consist of fully in-person lectures and studio classes. The instructors and TAs hope to provide an in-class experience for students as much as possible this semester. However, at times, it may be necessary for classes to move online due to some unpredictable circumstance such as a rise in COVID-19 cases on campus, extreme weather conditions, or illness/isolation of the instructor or TA. We will notify students as soon as possible if any classes will meet online. Any sessions that move online, will use the Zoom platform. We also strongly encourage students who are sick to stay home, so that we can safely continue to offer as many in-person events as possible. Students are strongly encouraged to vaccinate, mask, and test regularly to keep our campus community safe.

MyMathLab Course Information: We will be utilizing MyMathLab (MML) for homework and practice problems for quizzes and exams, through a joint code for the Thomas Calculus text and the Lay Linear Algebra text.

In order to register, you will need our course ID posted here to enroll into the course on MML for your section. Here is the course ID information:

Important notes on MML:

·       If you already have an account on MyMathLab using this combined textbook within the past 18 months, then you do not need to purchase a new code. Go to Canvas, click on Access Pearson  login to your account on MyMathLab, select the option to add our course. If you encounter the difficulty on this, please contact Pearson’s customer service to resolve the problem.

·       If you do not have a MyMathLab account using the Thomas or Lay textbooks, or if your account is over 18 months old, you will need to purchase a new code for our course.

When signing up for MyMathLab, it will be immensely helpful  (for grading purposes) if you will set your STUDENT ID to your USERID for the GT system (i.e., your Canvas USERID, as in “gburdell3”, etc).

MyMathLab comes with an entire electronic version of the textbook; it is your choice if you would also like to own the textbook in print. You may purchase a MyMathLab code either from the bookstore or on-line while registering at http://www.mymathlab.com. If you prefer to own a hardcopy of the text, the bookstore offers packages of MyMathLab combined with a loose-leaf or hardcover version of the Thomas textbook that is less expensive than purchasing the text and code separately.

PLEASE NOTE: GEORGIA TECH HAS A SPECIAL CODE PACKAGE THAT INCLUDES BOTH TEXTBOOKS.

THIS CODE CAN ONLY BE PURCHASED THROUGH THE CAMPUS BOOKSTORES OR DIRECTLY FROM PEARSON.

CODES PURCHASED BY OTHER VENDORS WILL NOT WORK!

Homework:

There are two components of Homework: 1) On-line Homework through MyMathLab, counted for grades. 2) Additional Exercises are assigned on Canvas and they will not be collected.
However, it is strongly recommended to work out every problem in both sets of assignments
before each quiz and test.

Quizzes & Tests

There will be 5 online quizzes, two in-class midterms and one in-class cumulative final exam. Quizzes and exams are based on examples from lectures, and homework assignments; and exams will be more in traditional format. For quizzes and exams, major steps, reasonings, and relatively detailed calculations are required.

Makeup Quizzes: Missing a quiz with excusable reasons per GT policies could choose from one of the following three options by contacting your TA and/or Instructor within a week:

a)  Applying the average of future remaining quizzes to replace the missing one,

b) Contacting your TA and/or Instructor with proper documentations for a makeup.

c) Count for a drop as we will drop one lowest quiz at the end.

Makeup Exam: Missing an exam with excusable reasons per GT policies could choose from the following options by contacting your TA and/or Instructor timely as described below:

 a) If you missed a midterm, within a week, you notify your TA and Instructor to apply the average of future remaining Exams (midterm and final) to replace the missing midterm.

b) If you missed a midterm or final exam, contacting your TA and/or Instructor within a week for midterms, and in 24 hours for Final with proper documentations for a makeup.

Academic Honesty

All students are expected to comply with the Georgia Tech Honor Code (the honor code can be found at http://www.policylibrary.gatech.edu/student-affairs/code-conduct). Any evidence of cheating or other violations of the Georgia Tech Honor Code will be submitted directly to the Dean of Students. Cheating includes, but is not limited to:

·       Using an unapproved calculator, books, or any form of notes on tests.

·       Copying directly from any source, including friends, classmates, tutors, internet sources (including Wolfram Alpha), or a solutions manual.

·       Allowing another person to copy your work.

·       Taking a test or quiz in someone else's name or having someone else take a test or quiz in your name.

·       Asking for a regrade of a paper that has been altered from its original form.

Grading:

Grades will be based on the exams, quizzes, and on-line homework.

Your best four quizzes count for 20%;

On-line MML homework counts for 10%,

Your better midterm counts for 30%, the other midterm counts for 10%.

Final exam counts for 30%.

If no curve is applied, your final grade will be assigned as a letter grade according to the

following scale:

A 90-100%

B 80-89%

C 70-79%

D 60-69%

F 0-59%

Curves:

When it is needed, curves will be determined by the median of each recitation section after final exam according to the end-of-semester grade distribution. In this course, we will only apply curves on the overall course grades, but not for any individual quiz or exam.
